Cactus Glass: A Sensorial Experience for Drinking Mezcal and Tequila

Unique Ceramic Design by Miguel Silva

Cactus Glass brings a sensorial experience when drinking, its bumpy surface and matte color glaze ceramic, along with the scent of your favorite alcoholic drink, triggers a ludic interaction, good for sharing joyful moments with family and friends.

The prickly pear from the cactus is a tasty, colorful fruit with a bumpy surface. This unique characteristic served as the inspiration for Miguel Silva to design Cactus Glass, a ceramic glass that aims to bring a sensorial experience to drinking mezcal, tequila, or any other alcoholic beverage. Whether enjoyed alone or with friends, at home or in a restaurant, Cactus Glass is designed to create memorable moments by engaging all the senses.

Cactus Glass stands out from other glassware with its bumpy surface and matte color glaze ceramic. The texture and appearance of the glass, combined with the scent of the drink, create a playful interaction that enhances the drinking experience. It is the perfect vessel for sharing joyful moments with loved ones.

The production of Cactus Glass combines modern and traditional technology. The ceramic plaster used for the glass was created using 3D printing, while the ceramic pieces themselves were made through ceramic casting. Each piece is carefully painted with pink on the interior and white, red, and green on the exterior surface, and then covered with a matte glaze.

With dimensions of 55mm in width, 55mm in depth, and 80mm in height, Cactus Glass is made entirely of ceramic. The choice of material adds to its unique and tactile qualities, providing a pleasant drinking experience.

Miguel Silva, the designer behind Cactus Glass, is known for his attention to detail and his ability to create emotional designs. His inspiration for this particular design came from observing daily life and finding inspiration in the forms and textures of the natural world. Through clay modeling, hand sketching, and 3D software, Silva explored different cacti designs before settling on the prickly pear shape for its simplicity and texture.

One of the challenges faced during the design process was finding the right glaze. In Mexico, ready-to-use glaze formulas are scarce, often requiring designers to formulate their own. Silva conducted several tests to achieve the desired pink, green, red, and white colors for Cactus Glass.

Cactus Glass was developed in Mexico City, starting in May 2014 and completed in November 2014 in Queretaro, Mexico. It has received recognition for its innovative design, winning the Iron A' Design Award in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware, and Cookware Design category in 2015. This award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements, contributing to a better world.

Experience the joy of drinking mezcal and tequila with Cactus Glass. Its unique design and sensorial qualities make every sip a memorable moment.
